Ingredients

  • 4 pieces hot dogs Juicy and savory, can be swapped with veggie sausages
  • 1 sheet package puff pastry Thawed if frozen, optional to cut into strips
  • 1 egg egg Beaten for egg wash
  • 1 teaspoon optional water To mix with egg for wash, if desired
  • ketchup or mustard dips Optional for serving

Equipment

  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Pastry brush
  • Sharp knife or pizza cutter
  • Oven thermometer (optional)

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 200°C (390°F) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Unroll the puff pastry sheet and cut it into 1/2-inch wide strips using a sharp knife or pizza cutter. This creates the 'bandages' for your mummy.
  3. Wrap each hot dog with a strip of puff pastry, starting at one end and spiraling around to cover most of the hot dog, leaving a small section at the top exposed for the 'face.'
  4. Place the wrapped hot dogs on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them evenly apart.
  5. In a small bowl, beat the egg with a teaspoon of water if using, then brush the pastry edges lightly with this egg wash using a pastry brush. This helps seal the pastry and gives a shiny, golden finish.
  6. Bake the hot dogs in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the pastry is deep golden brown and crispy.
  7. Once baked, remove the hot dogs from the oven and let them cool for a few minutes. The pastry should be crispy and flaky, and the hot dogs warm and juicy inside.
  8. Optional: Use small pieces of pastry or cutouts to create eyes or facial features with bits of mustard or ketchup for a fun mummy face.

  9. Serve your mummy hot dogs warm, with dips like ketchup or mustard on the side for dipping.

Notes

For an extra spooky touch, add small sliced olives or cheese to create eyes. Make sure to seal the pastry edges well to prevent leakage during baking. Adjust baking time depending on hot dog size for even cooking.
