Ingredients

  • 6 large large eggs fresh for easier peeling
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise for creamy filling
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard adds tang to filling
  • to taste salt and pepper for seasoning
  • 1 small red food coloring for bloodshot effect
  • 1 green food coloring green gel or green food coloring to mimic green eye detail
  • 1 teaspoon water to thin out gel coloring
  • optional small pieces of black olive or edible black gel to create pupils

Equipment

  • Saucepan
  • Mixing bowls
  • Piping bag or plastic sandwich bag
  • Small squeeze bottles or toothpicks
  • Knife
  • Cutting board

Method

  1. Place the eggs in a saucepan and cover with cold water. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then turn off the heat and let sit for 10 minutes to fully cook. Transfer the eggs to cold water to stop the cooking process and make peeling easier.
  2. Peel the eggs carefully once cooled, then slice each egg in half lengthwise with a sharp knife. Gently remove the yolks and place them in a mixing bowl.
  3. Mash the yolks with mayonnaise, mustard, and a pinch of salt and pepper until smooth and creamy. Adjust seasoning to taste for flavor and consistency.
  4. Spoon or pipe the yolk mixture back into the hollowed egg whites, filling them generously to create a rounded ‘eyeball’ appearance.
  5. Mix red food coloring with a small amount of water to create a bloodshot effect. Use a tiny squeeze bottle or a toothpick to draw blood vessel lines on each egg white for a gory look.
  6. Mix green food gel or coloring with water to prepare a slimy looking green substance. Use a piping bag or a small squeeze bottle to add a green ‘iris’ to each eyeball, placing it slightly off-center.
  7. If desired, place tiny pieces of black olive or edible gel in the green iris to mimic a pupil, adding a creepy, realistic touch.
  8. Arrange the decorated deviled eggs on a serving platter. For extra effect, you can surround them with crushed red pepper flakes or other Halloween-themed garnishes.
  9. Once assembled, chill the eggs briefly if desired to set the decorations. Serve immediately for a spooky, fun Halloween appetizer that looks as creepy as it tastes.

Notes

Handle the decorated eggs gently to avoid smudging the drawings. For best visual impact, prepare just before serving.
