Ingredients

  • 2 oz Tequila blanco
  • 1 oz Cointreau or orange liqueur
  • 1 oz Fresh lime juice about one lime
  • 1/4 teaspoon Activated charcoal powder food grade, culinary quality
  • 1 oz Simple syrup (optional, for sweetness)
  • Ice cubes Ice for shaking
  • Salt or sugar for rim Rim garnish optional, for decorating the glass rim

Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker
  • Strainer
  • Lime juicer
  • Measuring jigger
  • Cocktail glass

Method

  1. Prepare your glass by rimming it with salt or sugar; dip the rim in water or lime juice then into the garnish for a festive touch.
  2. Juice a fresh lime using a lime juicer until you have about one ounce of juice, then set aside.
  3. In a cocktail shaker, combine the tequila, orange liqueur, lime juice, and activated charcoal powder.
  4. Add ice cubes to the shaker, filling it about halfway to ensure proper chilling.
  5. Secure the lid tightly and shake vigorously for about 15 seconds, until the mixture is well chilled and visibly darkened, with some froth on top.
  6. Strain the cocktail into the prepared glass, pouring carefully to maintain the deep black color and avoid ice shards.
  7. If desired, add a small splash of simple syrup for sweetness, and gently stir to combine.
  8. Optionally, garnish with a lime wheel or a festive straw for presentation.
  9. Serve immediately while the drink is icy and frosty, showcasing its vibrant dark hue with a smoky aroma.

Notes

Ensure to use culinary-grade activated charcoal for safety. Adjust sweetness with simple syrup as desired. The drink can be customized with more or less lime for tanginess or more charcoal for a deeper black color.
